For information and referrals to community and social services, 211 Ontario is your resource. This free, confidential service can help you navigate a wide array of support options, from housing and food assistance to mental health and family programs. 💻 Virtual Urgent Care
Toronto’s Virtual Emergency Department provides a digital alternative for residents over the age of 18 seeking urgent but non-life-threatening medical care. This service is a joint effort by the University Health Network, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and Unity Health Toronto. Adults can use an online platform to book same-day virtual appointments, available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends and holidays, with bookings opening at 7 a.m.
The virtual ED is ideal for treating conditions like body aches, rashes, or nausea when a visit to a family doctor isn’t possible on short notice. Patients can interact with healthcare professionals via a phone, tablet, or computer, offering convenience to those with limited mobility or other challenges that make in-person visits difficult. This approach not only alleviates pressure on physical emergency facilities but also allows patients to receive care from home.
For children under 18, the SickKids virtual urgent care program provides remote medical consultation through technology. After entering symptoms into the online checker, users are guided to the most appropriate care setting. This might include a virtual visit with a SickKids Emergency Department clinician, advice to see a local primary care provider, or direction to visit an emergency department if necessary. The platform is secure and accessible on any device with internet connectivity.
