Our Good Caring team explains how the Alberta Adult Health Benefit provides medical coverage for low-income households who are pregnant or have high ongoing prescription drug needs.

What is the Alberta Adult Health Benefit?

The Alberta Adult Health Benefit program is designed to provide low-income adults in Alberta with coverage for various health-related services and products that they might otherwise struggle to afford. The program is particularly beneficial for those who do not have access to other health benefits through employers or other programs.

It is intended to offer transitional coverage for adults leaving welfare has been offered since 2002 via the Alberta Adult Health Benefit.

Who is eligible for the Alberta Adult Health Benefit?

Applicants must be residents of Alberta and must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or refugees.

Eligibility is primarily based on income levels. The program targets low-income individuals and families, including those receiving income support, and those who have high ongoing prescription drug needs.

When was the Alberta Adult Health Benefit introduced?

The Alberta Adult Health Benefit was introduced on July 1, 2003. Initially, the Alberta Adult Health Benefit was launched to address the gap in health coverage for low-income adults, particularly those without access to employer health benefits. It aimed to cover essential medical services like prescription drugs, dental care, and optical care.

In November 2002 a new program, the Alberta Adult Health Benefit, began. It extended
coverage on the same terms as the ACHB to adult family members leaving welfare for
the workforce (so long as families had incomes beneath the program’s cut-off threshold). In fiscal year 2003/04, this program paid $3.894 million in benefits to a monthly average of 1131 clients (up from an average of 628 in its first year of operation, 2002/03).

Over the years, the program expanded to include more comprehensive services, responding to the changing healthcare needs of the population. This included broader coverage of over-the-counter medications when prescribed, and enhancements in dental and optical care.

The Alberta Adult Health Benefit was designed to work in conjunction with other provincial and federal health initiatives to ensure a comprehensive healthcare safety net. This integration helps streamline access to necessary health services for eligible individuals and families.
