Important Information

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is one of the busiest non-commercial crossings between the United States and Canada, connecting downtown Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the tunnel handles mostly passenger vehicles and small commercial traffic, as its 13-foot, 2-inch ceiling height prohibits large trucks. Both the U.S. and Canadian sides feature toll and customs inspection plazas, including designated NEXUS lanes for trusted travelers, though these lanes do not operate around the clock.

Travel through the tunnel typically takes about 8 to 10 minutes in light traffic, but delays can be significantly longer during peak periods or due to roadway issues. While the nearby Ambassador Bridge may offer quicker access to major highways, the tunnel is favored for direct entry into the downtown cores of Detroit and Windsor. It is not accessible to pedestrians, bicycles, or motorcycles.

On the Canadian side, a duty-free store is located at 465 Goyeau Street in Windsor and operates daily year-round. Commercial vehicle services are available Monday through Friday with limited hours. Annual maintenance or safety drills, such as April’s emergency preparedness exercises, may temporarily close the tunnel and divert traffic.

For real-time traffic updates, travelers can tune into AM 760 WJR or call 1-800-381-8477 for Michigan road conditions. Questions about border services can be directed to the U.S. Customs office at (313) 393-3793 or to the Canadian Border Information Service. Additional operational details, including toll information and NEXUS hours, are available through the tunnel operator at (313) 567-4422 or (519) 258-7424.
